Maritime English courses for people working in the Maritime Industry

Course Overview:

This course is suited to all seafarers including officers, ratings and cadets who need to improve their level of English for their career, so as to ensure that it meets the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

Crews of different nationalities work on board vessels and speak many different languages. Problems in verbal communication are a danger to the vessel, the people, and the environment. Seafarers need a standard language to communicate with, for navigation at sea, in port, and on-board vessels with multilingual crews. Therefore, seafarers and the shipping industry use Maritime English as a common tool of communication. Becoming an expert in this specialised language is crucial to a successful Maritime career.

With this in mind, the Maritime English course combines a solid foundation of essential English communication skills with the IMO SMCP, the Standard Marine Communication Phrases designed to assist in the safety of navigation which must be used and understood by officers.

Main Course Aims:

  • To provide students with a solid foundation on essential English communication skills
  • To provide participants with both the necessary language and study skills to ensure success in their current or future Maritime role.
  • To prepare students for the MarTEL exam

Course Content:

The content of the course, arranged thematically, has been developed according to the suggestions of the IMO Maritime English Model Course 3.17. it also includes units on geography and specialised nautical topics. Different grammatical structures, lexis and language skills and tackled within each unit. Specific, functional writing aims are addressed each Friday. MarTEL exam skill-building is done daily. Specialised feedback on individual progress is given to students at the end of the course.
