And what a fabulous Christmas season it has been here at Gateway! We’ve had pretty lights, Christmas carols, a visit from Santa, chocolate treats and school parties with exquisite catering for teachers and students – simply superb!
Perhaps the merriest highlight was when our students (from Japan, Italy, Mongolia, Spain, Hungary, Turkey, Poland, Azerbaijan, Italy … you name it!) all prepared a different carol to sing for Santa with their teachers. It was a particularly good activity because students were putting their English to practice in song, which was excellent work for their fluency and great fun too!
Singing is in fact a wonderful way to learn a language, because it takes little effort to learn lyrics when they are set to a catchy tune. Once you have internalised the beat of the music, the words can follow more easily, and before you know it, you can belt out your favourite song at the top of your lungs! On top of that, it is also a very good form of pronunciation drilling, as, when you are singing, your speech aligns to that of the singer and can come out sounding more natural and accurate. Not to mention, it really is a cool and amusing form of self-study, totally not boring, wouldn’t you agree? So why not give it a go?
Here’s a fun suggestion for your “homework” for next Christmas:
- Look up your favourite carol on Youtube,
- Find a video with the lyrics on screen,
- Turn up the volume,
- And sing along to your heart’s content!
And if you really want to show off your singing talents and impeccable English diction/articulation,
- Record yourself singing it (with a friend or two if you like), and share your work of art online (and on the school’s Facebook page too, please!) 😉 #SingingEnglish
You’ve got a year to practise, so we look forward to seeing and listening to your homework next December! In the meantime, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2017!
