Placement test

We always recommend that you will do the test online prior to your arrival in Malta or prior to commencing the course with GSE so that you will not waste an hour doing the test on your first day. You will also receive the results of your test and classroom number and timetable if you do the test before coming to Malta – please do not do it last minute 2 or 3 days before but do it at least a week before! This will allow our academic team enough time to correct your test and send you the timetable by email.

The placement test takes between 1 hour – 1 hour 15 minutes and is the same for everyone. It is a reliable indication of your linguistic competence in English and is therefore crucial for us to determine what level of English you have and which class to place you in.

09:00 – 12:15 If you’re assigned to the morning timetable then you will proceed to class at 9am. We recommend that you wait a day or two before collecting your book so that you are sure the level you are in is the right level for you.
12:15 Morning General English classes over.
12:15-13:00 If you have Intensive English you have a 45 minute break before your conversation classes start at 1pm and continue until 2:30pm
13:00-14:30 Afternoon lessons

  • Group Conversation classes (as part of Intensive English) – 13:00-14:30
  • Or usually One-to-One lessons in General English, Conversational English, Business English and a variety of ESP Courses (English for Specific Purposes) – can be of any duration, as agreed between our academic team and the student.
15:00 – 18:15 Afternoon General English classes (double banking) start at 3pm and finish at 6:15pm with a 15 minute break in between (16:30 – 16:45).
18:30 – 20:00  Evening classes (10 lessons per week) General, Business English or IELTS exam preparation

We might also have timetables for General English courses between 12:30pm and 3:45pm.

Double banking system.  Please note that the school provides a double banking system whereby General English lessons may be held in the afternoon. If you do your placement test early enough, the timetable is sent to you by email a few days before your course starts, typically on Thursday or Friday before your first Monday. We recommend that you will check your timetable and if you need adjustments please reply to the email [email protected]

On a Monday evening we organize the Valletta by night welcome excursion for all the new students from all over the world – a great opportunity to see Malta’s capital city at night and take wonderful photos. It is also a great way to make new friends on the first day in Malta.
